Flora and Fauna The vegetation of the Bays of Huatulco is tropical and exuberant The main species is arboreal. Also, there is low thorny jungle, thorny brushwood, forests, and mangrove lagoons in the seacoast area. Its fauna is neo tropical. There are not any large mammals. Some of the animals that are found in the wild are: possums, armadillos, rabbits, squirrels and white tale deer. Weather Warm weather is one of the blessings that Huatulco has. The average temperature during the year is 28o C. Huatulco has 360 wonderful sunny days per year. The meaning of Huatulco is “place where the piece of wood (a cross) is adored and venerated”. The date of the foundation of Huatulco is unknown. Nowadays, tourist activities are concentrated in three areas: Santa Cruz , La Crucecita and Tangolunda. The resort area comprises nine bays in all; ( Santa Cruz , Chahue, Tangolunda, Conejos, Chacahual, Cacaluta, San Agustin, El Organo and Maguey) and 36 beaches, and several ecological preserves where you can find a variety of birds and reptiles.

The Bays of Huatulco have approximately 2,200 hotel rooms of the highest quality, banks, restaurants on the beach, discos, nightclubs, and a park with an outdoor coffee service. La Crucecita is the place were most of the tourist and general services are located.

The main square is surrounded by restaurants, boutiques and handicraft stores where it is possible to have fun browsing in the afternoons or evenings. Tangolunda is the area where the luxury (5 stars) hotels are located. You will also find two upscale shopping malls, and a majestic 18-hole golf course in this area.

Huatulco is the 5th integrated resort developed by FONATUR and consists of a territory of 21,000 hectares, a strip of shoreline 35km long and 7 km wide.

Puerto Escondido is thought to be the oldest tourist attraction in the region, and the centre of great tourist activity, both nationally and internationally.
